Precision Heavy Haulage

LMSS Platform Gantry Transport to Harwell Campus.

Challenge

Specialist Logistics Services managed the LMSS platform gantry heavy haulage move from the manufacturing facility in Chesterfield to the satellite test chamber at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. This move followed our involvement in the installation of the chamber in 2020 and required the careful handling of a critical piece of equipment destined for an advanced space technology programme.

Due to the gantry’s significant dimensions, the movement had to be carried out as an abnormal load, presenting a number of logistical and regulatory challenges. With a width of 5 metres, the transport required specialist planning to ensure compliance with UK road regulations while maintaining safety for the public and other road users.

To legally move the oversized structure, our team secured a VR1 Special Order, granting permission for the extra width on UK roads. Detailed route planning was undertaken, including swept path analysis, to assess road geometry, junction access and potential obstacles along the route. The operation also required close coordination with police and local authorities, as well as the deployment of multiple escort vehicles to safely manage the movement.

Solution

The gantry was transported using a Scania S770 4-axle, 150-tonne tractor unit paired with a two-bed, four-axle Goldhofer low-loader trailer. This specialist configuration provided the strength, stability and load distribution required for a heavy haulage operation of this scale.

Safety and precision were central to the transport plan. Two private escort vehicles accompanied the convoy to manage traffic and ensure public safety along the route, while a police escort was arranged to support the movement through busier sections of the journey. This coordinated approach allowed the convoy to navigate the planned route efficiently while maintaining full compliance with abnormal load regulations.

Working closely with local councils, police authorities and our in-house project logistics team, we managed every stage of the operation from permit acquisition and route planning through to the final delivery. As a specialist haulage company experienced in complex engineering logistics, our team ensured that every aspect of the move was carefully planned and executed.

Result
